Certified Access Specialists (CASp)

Why is it beneficial to consult with a CASp?

The State of California wants businesses to be completely accessible for everyone. To help make this happen, they created a program to certify individual inspectors. After passing the State tests, they get the title “Certified Access Specialist” (CASp).

A CASp has passed an examination and has been certified by the State of California to have specialized knowledge of the applicability of state and federal construction-related accessibility standards. A CASp will know which standards apply to your property based on the age of your facility and its history of improvements. While a licensed design professional, such as an architect or engineer, can provide you an access compliance evaluation of your facility: Only a CASp can provide services that offer you "qualified defendant" status in a construction-related accessibility lawsuit. You can retain the services of a CASp at any time, however, "qualified defendant" status is only provided if you receive an inspection of your existing facility and a report from a CASp, and abide to a schedule of improvements toward compliance before a construction-related accessibility claim is filed against you.

The best defense against an ADA lawsuit is to get a report done on your property by a CASp. Attorneys defending businesses recommend getting a CASp report done to reduce your potential penalties.

THE BENEFITS OF USING A CASp who is a member of CASI

When you use a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) who is a member of the Certified Access Specialist Institute (CASI), you get:

  • A CASp who is dedicated to furthering not just accessibility in the built environment but also understanding of accessibility laws and codes, so people understand not just the “hows” but also the “whys”.
  • A CASp who sees the benefit in working and collaborating with other CASps, to gain further knowledge and understanding, to standardize interpretations of gray areas of law and codes, and to provide an expert and unified voice to coordinate federal and state regulations.
  • A CASp with a support system of hundreds of other CASps, all willing to help each other, answer questions, as well as give interpretations and opinions.
  • A CASp with more opportunities for top notch training and continuing education, through both formal and informal discussions and seminars.
  • A CASp with access to an online community of other access specialists all over California.

When you use a CASI member CASp, you can be assured that you have hired someone with dedication to their profession, who is willing to put their expertise and knowledge to use for your benefit.

Certificate you will receive at no additional charge to post on your property to indicate that you are being proactive with making your property equally accessible for all who visit.
